When you think of a church, you probably expect to see a cross on top of a building or something like that. However, that is not what you will find when you visit Naples in Italy and look at the entrance of this ancient Italian church. At the top of its front door, is a skull sitting on two bones. It sounds interesting and mysterious at the same time. If Halloween were popular in Italy, this would be one of the places that would that be used for tricks.
There is a short history behind this skull. It is not an actual human skull but was carved out of one of the stones on the front door. It was curved out to remind people of the history of this church. That is not just a regular old church that is not longer used for worship. Underneath, you will find racks that were used to store the bones of the dead hundreds of years ago.
If you dig the floor, you will find vaults containing several bones of those who were buried beneath it. It is not known why it was used as a cemetery. It would be fascinating haunting if you were to have an opportunity to tour this church. Hardcore Italians find this place to represent the long history Italian Soil holds for us. There is a funny story doing rounds; it will be the cemetery that will experience the most resurrections!
However, that is not possible for now. That is because this church's blue doors were locked years ago. They have not been opened ever since. That is maybe because the whole of Naples is ancient in many ways. It is one of the only places that have continuously been inhabited for a very long time.
There are traces of history in Naples dating back to the times of Greeks who came before the times of Christ. There are also traces of Romans, Byzantines and Normans, and Spaniards who all came and left. The Naples conservationists are pressing to have many of the local sites listed in the United Nations Heritage Sites.
