How to Dress Like a Hardcore Italian
By: Liz Flynn
The Italians are known for their amazing fashion sense and meticulous style. This country has also produced some of the best-known and most successful fashion designers of all time. If the Italian look is something you aspire to achieve, then you should follow these fashion tips.
Aim for Quality
The Italians will not just wear any old trash. While this does not necessarily mean they will always wear designer gear, it does mean that they think about their appearance. Scuffed shoes, faded clothes and anything with a tear is an absolute no-no.
Dress Appropriately for the Occasion
An Italian will only ever wear clothes that are suitable for the occasion for which they are attending. This means casual gear for lunch with a friend, a suit for the office and formal wear for an evening event.
In some cases, less is more. This is not the case if you are visiting Italy. While you might dare to bare, showing off too much flesh is somewhat frowned upon by the Italians. There are no specific social rules on how much it is appropriate to leave uncovered; just try to leave something to the imagination.
Avoid Flip Flops
One thing the Italians truly hate is flip flops. No matter how warm the weather, the Italians wouldn’t be seen dead in a pair. Unless you want to see raised eyebrows, avoid flip flops at all costs.
There is an expectation that a groomed woman will always have her fingernails and toenails painted. Even the men get manicures to keep their nails in tip-top condition.
Swimwear Dos and Don’ts
The Italians have a double-standard when it comes to swimwear. Women in bikinis are frowned upon. In fact, many Italian beaches have placed an official ban on this form of swimwear. However, men in tight swimming trunks and speedos are very much the rage and are the swimwear of choice for Italian men.
Wear a Helmet
A more unusual fashion trend in Italy is the helmet. The Italians are very safety conscious and will not ride a bicycle, motorbike or moped without a helmet. Nothing too unusual about that, you may be thinking. However, it is what they do when they dismount their two-wheeled modes of transport that is unusual. They leave their helmets on to do their shopping, meet their friends or generally go about their daily business.
The one thing that Hardcore Italians never leave the house without are designer shades. Come rain or shine, the most stylish Italians will always wear their shades.
Keep Style in the Family
It is not just their own fashion sense that concerns the Italians; it is the style of the whole family. Italian parents make sure their children are equally well-kept and teach them about style from a young age.
